The Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation and Milwaukee basketball legend Bobby Portis want to remind you that speeding is a leading cause of death and injuries on Wisconsin roadways. Control Your Drive; don’t speed and don’t drive reckless and let’s work together to achieve zero preventable deaths on Wisconsin roadways.
Speeding is not worth the risk
Driving just 5 mph over the speed limit puts drivers, their passengers and everyone else on the road at a greater risk of a serious crash. Stopping distances increase and reaction time decreases at higher speeds. Crashes also are more violent at higher speeds. Speeding can be expensive as well as dangerous. Under state law, the costs of speeding citations range from $175 to $893 along with three to six demerit points.
Despite the dangers and expense of speeding, too many drivers willingly exceed posted limits. Speeding is by far the most common traffic conviction statewide, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Learn more about the dangers of speeding.
Safe Winter Driving
In Wisconsin, winter comes on fast and furious. Unfortunately, when this happens many drivers don’t alter their driving habits to accommodate for winter’s hazardous driving conditions.

Safe Winter Driving Tips
- Clear snow and ice from all windows and lights
- Pay attention
- Leave plenty of room for stopping
- Leave room for maintenance vehicles and plows
- Know the current road conditions. View winter road conditions
- Use brakes carefully
- Watch for slippery bridge decks
- Don't use your cruise control in wintry conditions
- Don't get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle
- Do not pump anti-lock brakes
- Look farther ahead in traffic than you normally do
- Remember that trucks are heavier than cars
- Go slow!
